The Palamidi fortress is one of the most significant and most impressive achievements of Venetian fortification architecture, built in record time between 1711-1714. During the Ottoman occupation, besides the fortress, it was also a place of prisons, where – as they say – in 1833 Theodoros Kolokotronis was imprisoned. Climbing the 999 steps to Palamidi, one can admire a panoramic view all over Nafplion and visit the historic chapel of Agios Andreas, the imposing bastions and the impressive reservoirs located on the
fortress.

The trademark of Nafplion is Bourtzi, the seaside fortress on the island of Agioi Theodoroi with its impressive architecture. It was built by the Italian architect Antonio Gambello and was completed by the engineer Brancaleone in 1473. Bourtzi or Castello dello Soglio during the Venetians was an essential part of the city’s wider fortification over the centuries.

Today the small island is accessible by boat from the port of Nafplion. The view of Nafplion and Acronafplia enchants visitors and creates memories that are engraved forever.

The Rocky Peninsula of Akronafplia or “Its Kale “Inner Castle”, as it was called by the Turks, was the ancient Acropolis of Nafplion. It is built on three levels, each of which was a separate castle. Today only a few buildings are preserved. The view to Bourtzi and the beach of Arvanitia is unique.

The Land Gate (Pyli Xiras) was built in 1708 by the French engineer Lassalle and was the only entry of the lower city from the land which closed after sunset. Today, the exterior of the portal has been rebuilt to remind its original form.

At Michail Iatrou Street there is a sculpture of exceptional art and one of the most important of the 19th century in Greece, known as the Bavarian Lion. It is dated around 1840 to 1841 with German Kristian Zigel sculptor. Today, in the area in front of the monument has been created a park with benches where visitors can stop while touring in Nafplio.

The archaeological site of the Asklipieion of Epidaurus and the unique Ancient Theater are located a few kilometers from Nafplion and are the attraction of tourists. The theater is renowned for its amazing acoustics, while in the summer you can watch many remarkable performances. Mycenae, one of the most important archaeological sites in our country, is also within walking distance. The Lions Gate is the oldest example of monumental sculpture in Europe. The archaeological museum of Nafplion was built in 1713 and is housed in the imposing Venetian stone building in Syntagma Square. On the two floors of the museum are housed remarkable exhibits showing the cultures that developed in Argolida from the last prehistory to the late antiquity. The charitable Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation “B. Papantoniou “was founded in 1974 for the purpose of research, study and promotion and rescue of modern Greek culture. The War Museum of Nafplion is housed in the building of the First Evelpidon School and was inaugurated in 1988. The Museum presents the Games of the Hellenic Nation and the visitor follows the history of Military School of Evilpides and the newer history of Greece from the Greek Revolution to liberation.

TRIANON-OLD MOSQUE

The Trianon or Old Mosque is located in Syntagma Square, in the center of the old town of Nafplion. It is the oldest building with Ottoman architecture in Nafplio.

PARLIAMENTARY

Among the most important monuments of the Ottoman period. A mosque, in the old town of Nafplion, which housed the parliament of Hellenes. Today it functions as a venue for events and conferences.

SYNTAGMA SQUARE
